First things first: it's important to understand the legality of weed in East Africa. Every country has a different approach to it. Generally speaking, it is not legal in most countries but it is quite common, and if you know the right person you can find it easily available. Uganda has a somewhat more relaxed approach with a medical cannabis program in effect, while recreational use is still a legal gray area with many young people smoking it casually but discreetly. On the other side, Kenya has made strides towards recognizing the medicinal benefits of cannabis; however, recreational use remains illegal and it is more difficult to find high quality buds. In Zanzibar because it's a party island and very touristic you will be offered weed few times if you walk in certain areas at certain times.

Most of the weed on Zanzibar is very low quality, some of the lowest quality we encountered, full of seeds and leaves, you never know what you are getting as it is always wrapped in paper. in Uganda the weed was top notch, high grade cured flowers like you would find in Amsterdam. In Kenya we were able to find really high quality Ethiopian sativa landrace which made us non-verbal for a while.

Before you venture out to find weed on the African streets, make sure to protect yourself from potential scams and all kinds of trouble.

Where to Find Weed in Uganda

So, you’re in Uganda and looking to get your hands on some decent bud to smoke so you can be stoned on your safari?

Here’s what you need to know. Local markets and social circles are usually the best places to start your search. Find someone who looks baked, is smoking a joint, or is wearing thick black sunglasses while indoors.

Certain parts of Kampala often have individuals who can connect you with reputable sources. Just remember to ask around—discretion is key in this situation. Building a rapport with locals can offer you not just access but also insights regarding quality and pricing.

From our experience price of weed in East Africa is 10-15 USD / gram for good quality weed. In Kampala we found a really good contact with access to high grade flower, we were actually shocked from the quality, it was really on point.

Finding Weed in Kenya

In Kenya, the search for good weed can be tricky given the more strict approach. However, just like in Uganda, local connections can be invaluable. We do not recommend looking for weed in Nairobi as few people are willing to chat about cannabis there. We did not have any weed while we were in Nairobi.

If you want to smoke good weed while in Kenya, we advise you to travel to Diani beach. In Diani there is a very laid back culture of rastafarian people and other coastal tribes, and smoking weed is very common there. There are many Italian people who live there and quite a few of them are big weed smokers.

Of course it is not very wise to smoke out in the open, you could be noticed by someone who can inform the police and you could potentially get harassed for money.

The best thing to do is to rent a nice private room in a nice resort, there are several very large luxury resorts on Diani Beach, get yourself a nice private balcony, and smoke it up discreetly.

How To find Good Weed in Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a beautiful place, with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The weed in Zanzibar however is mostly crap. We got offered weed many times while on the different beaches, people will approach you offering weed in day time or night time. Prices are 10-15 USD per gram. Several batches we picked up were mostly leaves and seeded flower with a few trichomes here and there. It took us a while until we encountered a reliable person. If you find a proper rasta man (not the fake rastas) he will help you find the top quality. The rest are just hustlers who just want your money and will give you crap in return. The weed available is bush weed with seeds but it does the trick if you get a decent batch.
